Five Element Acupuncture is a classical form of acupuncture dating back many centuries with its origins in ancient China. During this period in China, philosophies such as Taoism and Confucianism sprang into being, which emphasised the importance of nurturing our spirits. Whilst there are many different styles of acupuncture practised today, Five Element Acupuncture regards a healthy spirit as being central to good health and is always addressed in treatment. As with the earth we live on, we are each made up of the five elements... these are wood, fire, earth, metal and water. One of these elements is our constitutional or guardian element, which means that our greatest area of potential lies within one of the elements. When that element is treated with Five Element Acupuncture, a journey of healing and self-discovery is begun, allowing us to realise our full potential in all areas of our health, being and psyche.
Five Element Acupuncture is a very “person-centred” style of healing. When someone comes for treatment, a Five Element Acupuncturist is more likely to consider “how can this person’s health and wellbeing be supported?”, rather than “how can this person’s symptom be treated?”. This is because diagnosis and treatment is focused upon the health of the individual rather than a band aid solution to a symptom.
Illnesses or symptoms may be identical from person to person but the individuals suffering from them are very different. Different people require different treatment. Everybody is unique. The goal of treatment is to support people to reach their full potential physically, mentally and emotionally.
Acupuncture may assist with physical symptoms such as:
back/neck pain
migraines
irritable bowel syndrome/digestive disorders
women’s health issues
sports injuries
chronic illness, fatigue and stress related issues, often manifesting physically in the body
Symptoms on the mental level may include:
lack of focus/concentration
memory issues
lack of clarity or ‘brain fog’
Emotional symptoms include:
stress and/or overwhelm
anxiety
depression
fears/phobias
lack of motivation or burn out
Questions of a more spiritual nature are also explored:
aligning with life purpose
feeling life is meaningful
a sense of connection to life and others
revisiting forgotten dreams and ambitions
When our energy is in balance, our body is in optimum condition to heal and grow. Life brings us challenges but how we handle those challenges and whether we grow from the experiences or struggle, depends on our inner resilience.
We each have our own unique and unlimited potential that can sometimes be obfuscated or minimised by social conditioning or negative messages from childhood. These patterns of limiting beliefs or self-sabotaging behaviours need to be released and healed to achieve full health and potential.
People have a physical body that needs to be fed from the fruits of the earth, just as all animals and living things do. We also have a spiritual body that requires a different type of nourishment. The health of the human spirit is a key ingredient in how we experience our lives. This is a central tenet of Five Element Acupuncture.
